Texas Longhorns to be Without Key Running Back Against Sam Houston State
The Texas Longhorns, already navigating a difficult start to the 2025 season, will face their final non-conference opponent, Sam Houston State, without a key piece of their offense. Head coach Steve Sarkisian announced Monday that starting running back C.J. Baxter will miss the game as a precautionary measure due to a hamstring injury.
The injury occurred on the very first play of last week’s 27-10 victory over UTEP, forcing Baxter to the sideline for the remainder of the game. While the severity of the injury is not thought to be “overly significant,” the team is taking a cautious approach with a much-needed bye week following the Sam Houston State game, with the hope of having him ready for their SEC opener against Florida on October 4.
This is a familiar and frustrating situation for Baxter, a former five-star recruit who missed the entire 2024 season with a torn LCL and PCL in his knee. His 2025 season has been off to a slow start, with 24 carries for 110 yards, a far cry from the potential he showed as a true freshman. The injury against UTEP, while not as severe as last year’s, is a significant blow to a Texas offense that has struggled to find its rhythm.
In Baxter’s absence, the Longhorns will rely on a trio of other running backs. True freshman James Simon, who saw a heavy workload against UTEP with 17 carries for 67 yards, is expected to see increased playing time. Jerrick Gibson, who had 18 carries for 64 yards against the Miners, will also be a key part of the running back rotation. Additionally, the team is hoping for the return of Quintrevion Wisner, who has missed the last two games with a lower-leg injury.
The absence of Baxter is yet another challenge for the Longhorns offense, which has been under intense scrutiny, particularly with the struggles of sophomore quarterback Arch Manning. While Manning has shown flashes of his running ability, the team’s rushing attack will need to step up to take pressure off the passing game.
The Sam Houston State game, which the Longhorns are heavily favored to win, is the final opportunity for the offense to get on track before the gauntlet of the SEC schedule begins. The Longhorns’ coaching staff will be using this game as a chance to evaluate their young running backs and to build confidence in their offensive scheme. While the loss of Baxter is a setback, it also presents an opportunity for other players to step up and prove their worth.
