Auburn Cross Country Set to Unleash Top Talent at Southern Showcase

The Auburn Tigers cross country teams are poised to make a significant statement at the Southern Showcase in Huntsville, Alabama. As they gear up for what promises to be one of the most competitive early-season meets on their schedule, the Tigers are bringing their full strength, signaling their intent to contend in a formidable field. The Southern Showcase, hosted by Jacksonville State at the John Hunt Cross Country Park, will not only test Auburn’s mettle against regional rivals but also serve as a crucial preview of the course for the NCAA South Regional Championships in November.

Under the guidance of head cross country coach Aaron Kindt, the Tigers are looking to build on a promising start to the 2025 season. Both the men’s and women’s teams have already shown flashes of brilliance at the JSU Foothills Invitational, with the women’s squad taking home the team title and the men finishing a strong second. Now, they’ll face an elevated level of competition, including conference foes Alabama and Kentucky, as well as strong regional programs from Florida State, Georgia Tech, and Mississippi State.

“We’re excited to get the regular season off to a start,” said Coach Kindt. “This is as good as an early season meet you’re going to find competitively. Both teams will go in with what we expect to be our top 10. We’re going to be running a full roster this weekend.”

A Deep and Talented Roster

The strength of this year’s Auburn squad lies in its depth and the blend of returning veterans and promising newcomers. The men’s team will field seven athletes, while the women’s team will have ten, giving both squads a strong chance to compete for a top finish.

On the women’s side, a key leader will be senior Gené Coetzee, who is set to make her season debut. After an impressive track season last year, Coetzee is expected to be the frontrunner for the team. “We’re really excited about the way Gené has looked in practice,” Kindt noted. “We’re going to be leaning heavily on her to be our front runner this year. She’s ready for that responsibility.”

The women’s team also boasts a number of other talented runners who have already shown their potential this season. Junior Cady McPhail and junior Mary Mac Collins were particularly impressive at the JSU Foothills Invitational, finishing third and fourth respectively, and setting new personal bests in the process. Their strong performances suggest a potent one-two punch that can score high in any meet. They will be joined by a mix of experienced runners and new faces, including seniors Shelby Balding and Hailey Howard, junior Audrey Dunn, sophomores Addison Boyer, Mary Katherine Malone, and Alexandra Walsh, and freshman Kennedy Hamilton.

For the men, the squad is led by the young but dynamic duo of sophomore Nickson Chebii and junior Max Hardin. Chebii, in his first collegiate 5k, won the JSU Foothills Invitational with a blistering time of 14:44.11, while Hardin delivered a personal best to take second. Their ability to push each other and set a fast pace at the front of the race will be a major advantage for Auburn.

A significant addition to the men’s team is transfer Joshua Kosgei from the University of South Carolina. Kosgei, who brings a wealth of experience and talent, is expected to step into a leadership role alongside Chebii and Hardin. Coach Kindt expressed his excitement about the transfer, stating, “We’re really excited to have Joshua on board and the talent that he can provide us with. He’s a very talented individual that we’re excited about long term.” The men’s team is rounded out by seniors Rex Green and Joseph Perry, junior Evan Hill, and freshman Bryce McCleary.

The Course: A Familiar and Critical Test

The Southern Showcase will take place at the John Hunt Cross Country Park in Huntsville, a course the Tigers are very familiar with. This familiarity could prove to be a significant advantage, as the athletes know the nuances of the terrain and can better strategize their races. The men’s 8k will start at 7:30 a.m. CT, followed by the women’s 5k at 8:30 a.m. CT.

This familiarity extends beyond the team’s history with the course, as it will also be the site of the NCAA South Regional Championships later this season. The Southern Showcase offers a critical opportunity for the Tigers to not only get a feel for the course but also to put themselves on the regional and national radar. A strong performance here would be a huge confidence booster and set them up for a successful postseason run.

As the Auburn cross country teams lace up their spikes for the Southern Showcase, the atmosphere will be one of anticipation and high stakes. It’s a chance for the Tigers to prove that their early-season success was not a fluke and that they have what it takes to compete with the best in the country. With a combination of experienced veterans and hungry newcomers, all eyes will be on how Auburn performs on the familiar terrain in Huntsville. “We’re excited to get out there,” said Kindt. “This will be the first meet where we let them off the leash and we see what happens. That’s where you hope that all the things you’ve talked about in practice click.”
