From “Dicker the Kicker” to NFL History: The Unstoppable Rise of Cameron Dicker

The journey of an NFL kicker is often a volatile one, a roller-coaster of triumph and despair, of game-winning kicks and gut-wrenching misses. But for former Texas Longhorns standout Cameron Dicker, his professional career has been an unprecedented and historic ascent. From an undrafted free agent who was cut by three different teams to the most accurate kicker in NFL history, Dicker’s improbable rise is a testament to his talent, his resilience, and his unwavering belief in his abilities.

A Historic Feat in the City of Angels

The Los Angeles Chargers’ Week 2 matchup against the Raiders was a typical AFC West slugfest, a low-scoring affair decided by a few key plays. But for Dicker, it was a chance to etch his name into the NFL record books. Entering the game with 93 made field goals on 99 attempts, Dicker needed just one more attempt to qualify for the NFL’s all-time field goal percentage list, which requires a minimum of 100 attempts.

Dicker wasted no time, nailing a 38-yard field goal on the Chargers’ opening drive. He followed that up with another successful kick, finishing the night 2-for-2 and bringing his career numbers to an astounding 95 made field goals on 101 attempts. His career accuracy rate of 94.1% officially moved him to the top of the NFL’s all-time list, surpassing the legendary Justin Tucker, who sits at 89.1%.

The accomplishment is nothing short of incredible. While Tucker is widely considered the best kicker of all time, Dicker’s career is on a trajectory to potentially challenge that notion. He has been a model of consistency since he joined the Chargers in 2022, and he has a knack for making clutch kicks in high-pressure situations. In his short career, he has already made multiple game-winning field goals, earning him the trust of his coaches and teammates.

The Winding Road to Glory

Dicker’s path to NFL history was not an easy one. After a stellar college career at the University of Texas, where he earned the moniker “Dicker the Kicker” and made a name for himself with a game-winning 40-yard field goal against Oklahoma, he went undrafted in the 2022 NFL Draft. He signed with the Los Angeles Rams but was released before the season began. He then had a brief stint with the Baltimore Ravens, where he was also released. His big break came when he signed with the Philadelphia Eagles’ practice squad, where he filled in for an injured kicker and was named NFC Special Teams Player of the Week after his first game. Despite his success, he was cut a few weeks later.

The Chargers, a team that had struggled with consistency at the kicker position for years, signed Dicker in November of 2022. It was a move that would change the course of his career and the team’s fortunes. He immediately made an impact, winning AFC Special Teams Player of the Week in his debut and proving that he was a reliable and clutch kicker. He finished his rookie season having converted 21 of 22 field goals and all 24 extra-point attempts.

A Future in the NFL Record Books

The Chargers’ decision to trade their starting kicker, Dustin Hopkins, before the 2023 season, was a clear vote of confidence in Dicker. He has not disappointed, continuing to perform at an elite level and cementing his place as one of the league’s top kickers. His historic accuracy is a testament to his hard work and his ability to perform under pressure.

While Dicker’s journey from undrafted free agent to NFL record holder is a great story, it’s also a reminder that sometimes the best talent is found in the most unexpected places. The Chargers are thanking their lucky stars that three other teams passed on the kid from Texas.
